In order to keep your instrument in good condition, maintenance is required. By doing so you will ensure your instrument has a long life and sounds great. Each instrument requires different care and appropriate products and techniques which should be applied. By following these general outlines, your instrument will stay as good as new. It is best to purchase a maintenance kit in order to keep your instrument in good condition.
Clarinet, Saxophone (alto/tenor)
After each use of your clarinet use a swab to clean the inside, where moisture will have collected. A small brush can be used to clean in tight areas around the keys to get rid of any dust or residue: Cork grease is important so each piece of your instrument can be put together gently and carefully. Key oil will aid any sticky keys and a polishing or soft cloth should be used after the instrument has been handled in order to clean off any residue left by your hands.
Trumpet
To keep your brass instrument in a condition which will make it playable, good care is very critical. You must clean it after every use to remove the acids left from saliva. A cleaning snake is a tool used to clean the inside of your trumpet. Valve oil is also needed in order to keep the keys moving smoothly. Tuning slide grease and a polishing cloth are also important to keep your instrument well maintained.
Flute
After each use of your clarinet use a swab to clean the inside, where moisture will have collected. A small brush can be used to clean in tight areas around the keys to get rid of any dust or residue. Your flute should be equipped with a cleaning rod in which a special cloth is used to clean the insides.
Violin
Violins are very fragile and therefore delicate care is required to protect your intsrument. When not using your violin keep it in its case. This will prevent “accidents” from occurring and potetial damage to your instrument. A soft lint free cloth should be used to keep off dust and resin build up. Only use polish designed for violins or it may do more harm than good.
